girlsdontcry's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Germans Well, I was in a beautiful part of Italy for five days and I swam in the sea every day and ate amazing food. But I was stuck up the top of a mountain and couldn't get anywhere by myself, in a one-bedroom house with three other adults and four children under the age of seven. Not only that, but the other three adults were Germans, and doing their utmost to uphold every prejudice you might have about Germans being uptight and humorless. Everytime I walked in the kitchen the German mother was there sputtering "mein Gott" because there was a smudge on the stainless steel surface. And I had no idea what I was supposed to say to her when she held up a dishcloth and said:"WHO DID THIS?" The dishcloth, a piece of cloth that is used to wipe up mess, had a mark on it and she was really upset because it had just been washed. Isn't that just taking it a bit far? Also, when everyone was in bed (in the lounge room), then her husband decided that he couldn't possibly get to sleep without getting up to Hoover something. So yes, very relaxing. The area is being colonized by Germans, who are doing up these rundown farmhouses and Germanizing the area. By, for example, building these enormous iron gates. I don't know what they think they're keeping out -- this is an area where people don't look cars or houses, and there are hardly any other people around anyway. I had the pleasure of being driven around in a Mercedes with German licence plates (stuck in the backseat inbetween a four-year-old boy and his seven-year-old sister). And you get some really REALLY mean looks when you're driving around in a car with German plates. So, it's good to be back in London.
